Newly diagnosed and have no idea where I belong...?

Question:
I am a new diabetic, but unfortunately I nor my are not certain what kind of diabetic. They initially thought Type II, until I was sent to an . The thought I was honeymooning Type I, , or due to my age (I'm 26), normal weight, and the fact that I exercise regularly...I just got back my GAD and ICA tests back and they were all negative, and my 2-hour C-Peptide was 1.4 and 4.0...so I am still producing insulin, although my doc did think 1.4 was low for a fasting of 144. Now they are going to send me off to a geneticist to run tests for ...the Metformin seems to be working for me o.k. (although I still will spike above 180 if I eat more than 25 carbohydrates at one meal), so maybe I really am just a Type II. On top of that there isn't any diabetes in my direct line, so it makes everything even more confusing. Anybody else in my boat? As odd as this sounds I feel like I am without a community, although the diabetic community on this forum seems to be less divided than on other places on the web. All this confusion did make me realize that all diabetics alike are in more ways than we realize whether we are Type 1, 1.5 or 2 and it's important that we try to breakdown societies stereotypes.

Wow, I thought I was one of the rare few. When the doctor looked at me, he said that I didn't appear to be the typical type 2 diabetic. I am not overweight and am only 27yrs old. I honestly thought that if I kept in shape that I wouldn't have to worry about getting diabetes, because it runs in my family on both sides, i have always worried. I guess the weight thing is just a myth and I just have bad genes. I know how you feel about the glucose levels, I feel if I evenlook at anything with carbs in it, my glucose levels shoot up immediately. I am on 850mg of Metformin twice a day. Not sure if it is helping me or not, because, I am watching what I eat more and I didn't monitor my blood glucose until after I started taking the medication. I need to get a referal to see a nutritionist, because I have just been carb counting for the most part. I am so new at this it is a bit overwhelming right now. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone! Merry Christmas by the way

welcome despina,
just hang in there for now and spend time learning what happens to your blood sugars when you eat your regular foods, you will very quickly know what does what.
test, test, test your blood sugars before each meal, two hours after the first bite and at bedtime.
all of this information will help you and also help your specialists too.
i hope they dont take too long putting you in the right box, once thats done at least you will know you are on the correct treatment for you.
we are all here to help

Welcome Despina....and so glad you found us!
My daughter (12) and i are having the same questions raised at the moment. My daughter was 3 months ago initially type 1, then they wondered if she was honeymooning, then they looked at me and started asking questions about my diagnosis (type 2 ) and treatment and most of all my size (100lbs!)We do have a strong family history however which is adding weight to the argument about . Meanwhile we are waiting for my daughters bloods to come back as they re tested after all these questions. So I'm totally with you...it really doesn't make a huge difference to treatment or the care we have to take with our lives. Gemma is on insulin and I'm on meds (Met and gliclazide). Great to see you have got a handle on the situation quickly. I understand how confusing the whole picture can be!
Looking forward to hearing about your experiences and hope you can find lots of support on here as we have done.

Hello and
I just want to mention that there is no age limit on any type, so you can still be anything. You can also be without antibodies. But at the same time, you could also be or something else. What ever type you are I hope that it gets straightened out real soon. But chances are that if the met is working for you then you are probably a . But the other tests will answer that question. And different foods will cause you to spike. You kinda just need to eat and test to learn what bothers your . Good luck

Believe it or not, there are many in your situation. I go to a school with a few young adults like you. They are thin, overall healthy looking, and they developed .
As afar as the whole carb thing goes, yes some foods will spike you. But you still need a certain amount of carbs for normal body function. Its a tricky thing to get, but the best way is to eat and test 2 hours later to see where you are. We are all different with foods, one works for her, but the same spike you.

Well of course you're not the only one! See me for example. I too was doing fine on metformin but about 6 months alter I was switched over to insulin. I was dxd at 21, was also of regular weight and moderately active. It's more important that you're receiving a treatment that helps you out, regardless of your type. Hopefully it won't take them as long to properly diagnose you as they did me (8 months), but as long as your numbers are fine you are too.

I just want to welcome you to DD!! I was originally diagnosed as Type II (and I'm 25) but my GAD antibodies came back at 24 (normal is 1.5) I went to an on my own cause I thought my Dr. was hallucinating the diagnosis.
