Thank you, furball64801. One question that puzzles me is that why not everybody just take metformin ER. I think the reality is that most people take standard metformin instead of extended release metformin.
Answers:
Good question some of it boils down to cost I guess.
Answers:
I take the regular metformin and asked my doctor whether the ER would be better since it seems the regular only lasts me about 5 or 6 hours. He said the ER would not give me any better coverage. I know the maximum dose of ER is less than the regular.
Answers:
Generics are available for the ER formulations.

I for one had terrible issues with standard metformin and my stomach. Terrible wind, belching and flatuence.
Went onto Glucophage and now fine, no problems.

I just switched to metformin ER about two weeks ago. Had brutal stomach pains and expensive medication to counteract it. I was taking 2 1/2 - 3 metformin a day. I am now taking 1 metformin ER a day. My numbers are mostly holding good. The metformin ER costs me about a buck a pill while the metformin is about 17 cents a pill. I was paying 80 dollars a month for the counteracting pills. I am now ahead @ 60 dollars a month. I also have no more stomach pain.

Thank you all. Great information. Seems that the main concern for metformin ER is the cost. Before I came to this forum, I thought maybe there are other disadvantages of metformin ER over standard metformin. I will go with metformin ER.
Answers:
The regular metformin gave me stomach aches, cramps, and nausea.
The metformin er seems to be much better for me.
But, I haven't been on the er but about a month.
